Yesterday evening...
My husband had just pulled into the driveway and actually saw the furry criminal jump from the deck railing onto the bamboo arches holding up our plants, pull a tiny green tomato off the vine with its tiny claws, and start munching.
I've been meaning to "tackle" this & put some kind of fencing around the garden, sprinkle cayenne pepper, get a plastic owl or something. (I got all kinds of great tips from so many of you - Thank you!) but since the recent robbery pretty much wiped us out, there wasn't anything left to be stolen...until now!
So in an effort to protect the one little tomato that is left dangling from that vine, holding on for dear life, we took the kids and went to Home Depot. (Noah loves Home Depot...such a little man.) We got a plastic garden fence (which I hope the squirrels won't gnaw through), but I couldn't find a plastic owl. And when I asked an employee about them, she looked at me like I was a little off my rocker.
When we got home, I had an "a-ha moment"!
Why didn't I think of this before???
I had this guy in the garage the whole time!
If only I had put him out there before to scare those pesky squirrels away...
As Abby helped me place the scarecrow right in front of the tomato plants, I told her that, hopefully, this scarecrow would scare those squirrels and protect our garden.
She looked up at the trees surrounding us and called out, "Hey squirrels! We've got a scary surprise for you!" :)
I hope they think he's scary....maybe I should draw some fangs on him on something.

It will either keep him out, or give him some extra exercise. I'm curious to find out!
Personally I find scarecrows terrifying so I'm pretty sure it'll work on the squirrels.
Unless the squirrels are braver than me.

That reminds me of my little garden. I have zucchini growing but before I knew the difference between the male and female flowers I thought something was eating my flowers before they had a chance to become zucchini. After some research I learned that they were only male flowers that fall off on their own after a day of blooming. But just this morning I saw a female flower starting to grow--so hopefully soon I will have some fruit to show for my labor.
Let me know how the scarecrow works out--I might need something like that when my garden starts to sprout veggies.

It would drive me absolutely batty to lose my garden to pesky animals! Hopefully the fence and scarecrow work. Are you worried the squirrels will just hop over using the wodden fence?
You must let us know how it works! I'm having some bunny problems here.
In the meantime, come on over... I gots tomatoes coming out of my eyeballs. The boys are tired of spaghetti, so I'm freezing some and canning some.
I know the feeling. We have raccoons invading my corn. We put a radio under buckets. If they hear noise they will stay away. So far it's working. You could try put moth balls around your garden. They don't like the smells.
ahh. that is so darn cute kel. I love it!! I'm scared.
